Get the total he of the steps or
porch for your required system.
To meet codes you need 1 foot every
1 inch of height.
(There can be exceptions if there are space restrictions)
Codes requires a flat surface at
the top a ramp- if you have a porch that is approximately
60"x60" this will work (unless there
is a rise from the porch to the top of the doorsill).
If you have just steps you should place a platform
over them, like a WP660 platform.
Every 30 feet of ramp run, you need
a resting platform.
Changing in direction right or left
90° you need a 60"x60" platform like
a WP6060 platform. If turning back you need a 60"x96
like a WTB6096 turn back platform.
Handrails are required all ramps
over 60° high. Also vertical pickets are required
in some installations.
The most common mistake made by first-time
ramp users is trying to use a ramp that is not long enough for
safe and comfortable usage. In general, ramp designers and architects
recommend a SLOPE of 1:12, or a 5 degree incline. This translates
to a maximum slop of 1” RISE for every 12” of RUN (length).
The ADA requires a platform after every
30 feet run of ramp and a 60” level landing at the top and
bottom of a ramp run. If you are using a power chair or scooter
it is important to note that even motorized equipment can experience
power reductions and/or battery drains when put in extreme slope
or angle conditions, so it is important to design rest areas for
both humans and machines, aw well as adequate sized platforms for
an adequate turning radius.
