- Get the total height of the steps or porch for your required system.
- To meet codes you need 1 foot of run for every 1 inch of height. (There can be exceptions if there are space restrictions)
- ADA Codes require a flat surface at the top a ramp - if you have a porch that is approximately 60" x 60" this will work (unless there is a rise from the porch to the top of the doorsill). If you have just steps you should place a platform over them.
- For every 30 feet of ramp run, you need a resting platform.
- Changing in direction right or left 90° you need a 60" x 60" platform. If turning back you need a 60" x 96" platform.
- Handrails are required for all ramps over 60" high. Vertical pickets are also required in some installations.
